Kurt grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado and was an outstanding athlete excelling at all sports, but baseball in particular.
Kurt was severely injured in a car accident when he was 12 years old losing his best friend Doug who passed away as a result. Kurt was brain-injured from the accident and worked hard to learn how to walk and talk again. He was able to graduate from Poudre High School in 1980. Kurt was an active member of First Christian Church in Fort Collins and known throughout the Fort Collins community--an inspiration to all.
Kurt's mom and brother returned to Iowa in 1995 in an orchestrated effort to manage Kurt's ongoing care. He lived with his family until 24-hour care was required. In Iowa, Kurt was involved with many agencies including the Brain Injury Association of Iowa and First Circle Friends. Kurt had a big heart followed by a big smile and a big hug for all he met. Kurt's smile was infectious and he could calm the storm with his laugh. He loved the Lord, his family, and Dr. Pepper Ten---Kurt just loved. Kurt will always be remembered for those special gifts that he gave to us all and he will be sadly missed. His final gift was as a donor for the Iowa Donor Network.
Kurt is survived by his brother Kevin and sister-in-law Julianne Christensen of Ankeny, Iowa; his nieces and nephews: Brianna, Nathan, Morgan and Liam Christensen; his aunts and uncles: Judy and Verlin Koch, of Westside, Iowa; Jean and John Ang, of Kiron, Iowa; Aldean Keairnes, of Dow City, Iowa; and Joel and LouAnn Keairnes, of Lamberton, Minnesota; a special friend, Becki; close family friends both in Iowa and Colorado who have always kept Kurt near and dear in their hearts. Kurt was preceded in death by his mother, Lynda Christensen, and his uncle, John Keairnes, as well as his grandparents.
Per family wishes, Kurt will return home to Colorado and no local services will be held. Please celebrate Kurt's life in your special memories and in your heart. A special thank you to the Altoona Police Department and Altoona Fire Department as first responders. Your care of Kurt was very much appreciated.
Kurt, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race and kept the faith. Now go get that crown of righteousness, which the Lord is waiting to award you. 2 Timothy 4:6-8.
