Betty Louise Jozwick

It is with great sadness that the children of Betty Louise Jozwick announce her passing, she was called to the Lord on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at the age of 87 years. She was born in Coggon, Iowa to Russell Kenneth Hicks and Nellie Mae (Jarboe) Hicks. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jerome Jozwick (1990), her much loved Sister Helen Turk (2003), and her wonderful parents Russell and Nell Hicks. Our Mother will be lovingly treasured by her children Chad, and Lisa (Patrick) Loyd and her Grandchildren Tanner 21, Tatum 12, Trenton 10 along with Hurley and Hudson (dogs). Her Grandchildren were a joy to her and they cherished the time with her, particularly the time she resided with them in California. She is survived by several relatives; cousins nieces and nephews,

Betty grew up in El Paso, Illinois where she thrived in academics, piano, choir, theatre and had many childhood friends. She graduated from El Paso Township High School in 1949. Freshman, Sophomore,and Junior years she was the secretary/treasurer and active in the girls choir and Junior Red Cross. Also, she received the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Certificate on May 31, 1949. She adored her grandmother Ellen Hicks of El Paso, IL and her Aunts and Uncles. After high school she attended Illinois Wesleyan University (1949 - 1951). On February 3, 1952 she joined the United States Air Force and she separated from the Air Force on February 4, 1955. Our Mother was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico and Ramstein Air Base in Ramstein, Germany. She received three stripes and afterwards the following: Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service medal and Army of Occupation medal (Germany). Thereafter, she traveled throughout Europe. Upon returning to the United States she moved to Ann Arbor, and enrolled in The University of Michigan and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a teaching certificate. Mother worked as a librarian when she met Jerry Jozwick in 1958 at Van Boven’s Clothing Store on State Street in Ann Arbor and they were married 2 years later. Mother was a teacher at St. Thomas Grade School and a Freshman English teacher in the High School. Mother worked very diligently from her childhood piano recital in Chicago throughout her entire life. Our Mother had a vast amount of interests: AAUW, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Master Gardener, traveling, nature, museums, reading, music, education, cooking, letter writing, stamp collecting and Michigan Football. Mother received two awards from AAUW; 1986 Gift Honoree and 1986 Booksale Co-Chair. Also, certificates from Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Michigan State University in 1982 for the Master Gardener Program. Our Mother’s greatest loves were flowers, herbs, travel, education, friends and family. She was loved by all that met her, and had a very dear friend Jane Krause that was like a sister to her. Our Mother had the most beautiful smile that was of an Angel and we will always love you Mother - GOD BLESS YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!

Visitation Thursday, Sept. 13th, from 3-8 pm with 7 pm Rosary at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave, Ann Arbor. Instate Friday Sept.14th at 9:30 am until time of the Funeral Mass at 10 am at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth Street, Ann Arbor. Immediately following the Mass is the interment at St. Thomas Cemetery, reception to follow.
