A resident of Dexter, Michigan, Carol passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital from complications of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Carol was born in East Cleveland, Ohio, on March 19, 1939, the oldest child of Ladimer and Rachel (Leuty) Sykora, and she grew up in the Cleveland area and in and around Geauga County, Ohio.
Carol graduated from Burton High School in Burton, Ohio, in 1956, and from Kent State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1960. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Western Illinois University in 1985, majoring in Counseling and Guidance. Carol had multiple careers, beginning as an elementary school teacher. She also owned a store selling used books and handmade crafts, taught English as a second language, and worked as an administrative assistant at an insurance agency. Carol concluded her working life as a mental health counselor at the Community Mental Health Center in Macomb, Illinois.
Carol’s avocation was as an artist specializing in intricate, machine-quilted hangings. She took great pleasure in designing and creating these beautiful pieces, and won multiple awards for them. As a volunteer, she was a radio reader for the blind in Macomb and a longtime worker at both the Northwoods Humane Society and the Community Food Shelf in Hayward, Wisconsin. Carol loved to sing, and belonged to several choirs over her lifetime, including many years at the First Lutheran Church in Hayward. She also enjoyed yoga, her quilting club, and book clubs. She loved and was loved by many.
Carol was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Bruce Meyers. She is survived by her son Jonathan Meyers and his wife Catherine Barnett, daughter Amy Applin and her husband John, and daughter Sara Stauffer, as well as eight grandchildren—Samuel Meyers, Jackson Meyers, Alia Applin, Alex Sitner, Mariah Sitner, Kristen Stauffer, Erin Stauffer, and John Stauffer. She is also survived by her siblings—David Sykora and his wife Ann, James Sykora and his wife Christa, Susan Tinlin and her husband William, and Brian Sykora—and by her “twin” cousin Mary Ellen (Leuty) Strong, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
