Catherine A. Mazzolini, Age, 67, passed away peacefully at Arbor Hospice on January 5, 2016. Cathy, as she loved to be called, faced her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer with a positive fighting spirit that inspired not only her family and dear friends, but all the medical staff that were with her throughout her illness. Cathy was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on April 29, 1948 to the late Josephine and Ettore Mazzolini. She was member of the St. Thomas High School graduation class of 1966 and went on to obtain a medical secretary degree from Cleary College. Cathy worked as a medical secretary at the University Hospital for thirty-five years and at the Michigan Visiting Nurses for the last ten years.
The St. Thomas Parish Community was very important in Cathy’s life. She found great joy in her work with the Altar Rosary Society where she served as secretary for many years. At their annual bake sale, which Cathy coordinated, one could always find her popular “skidoos cookies”. Cathy loved making the Mazzolini Italian sauce for the church’s spaghetti suppers. Cathy worked tirelessly at these events. Cathy was a stalwart of the Italian Club and the Ann Arbor Ethnic Fairs in the 1980’s. More recently, Cathy volunteered at Emmanuel House. Cathy understood the importance of service, and while she clearly had no qualms of letting her fellow volunteers know how things “should be done”, she did so with a very giving and loving spirit.
Cathy enjoyed visiting her sister’s family in Albany, New York and seeing the friends she grew to love there.
Cathy is survived by her sister, Maria (Roger) Markovics, her nephews Peter Markovics, and Matthew (Maura) Markovics, her grandniece Mia Markovics, devoted cousins, and many dear friends.
Cathy’s family would like to give a special thanks to the Michigan Visiting Nurses for the support they provided to Cathy throughout her illness, to the Altar Rosary Society for their love and comfort, to Arbor Hospice, and to her dear friend Rose Ann Yurko for always being at her side.
The family will receive friends at Muehlig Funeral Chapel on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will take place on Monday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth Street, Ann Arbor at 10:00 a.m. with visitation at 9:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Cathy’s memory may be made to the Altar Rosary Society of St. Thomas Parish, the Michigan Visiting Nurses, Arbor Hospice, the Emmanuel House, or a charity of your choice.
