George Clarence Stewart, age 87, from Ann Arbor, died peacefully at home on December 19, 2021. He was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary A Stewart, his father, Clarence D Stewart and sister Mary Claire (Stewart) Toomey.
George grew up in Saginaw. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School with honors in 1952. He then left Saginaw to continue his education at The University of Michigan. He graduated with honors in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in history. George continued his education at The University of Michigan Law School obtaining his Juris Doctor degree in 1959. He spent the early years of his law career working in public service and spent the later years of his career in private practice in Ann Arbor with his good friend and brother-in-law, John Toomey.
George met the love of his life, Patricia Marie Carroll, while washing dishes in her sorority at The University of Michigan. They married in January 1960 and had their four children over the next seven years.
George’s chief interests were his wife and family, whom he loved profoundly and unreservedly. He had a lifelong connection to DeTour Village in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which is where his father Clarence was born and raised. He and his family spent time together there every summer. He and Pat were woodworkers and making furniture for their houses in DeTour and Ann Arbor brought them great joy. He was also a lifelong, avid reader. He was a continuous member of the same book club since 1984 and taught literature classes with Elderwise for over ten years. George was an excellent cook and loved all parts of food preparation and presentation. Sharing meals with his friends and family was one of his favorite activities.
George is survived by his wife Patricia as well as his four children, Genevieve Carroll Stewart (Jan Schlaff) of Ann Arbor, Daniel George Stewart (Shannon Stewart) of Ann Arbor, Jacqueline Margaret (Stewart) Atchison (Thomas Atchison) of Clarkston, MI and Matthew Joseph Stewart (Donna Bilkovic) of Gloucester, VA. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas Stewart Atchison, Nicholas Robert Atchison, Matthew Joseph Atchison, Michael Daniel Stewart and Katherine Patricia Stewart. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth Street in Ann Arbor on Monday, December 27, 2021 at 10:00AM. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00AM until the time of the service.
