

John Woodworth Henderson M.D. PhD, retired Ophthalmologist and Professor Emeritus of the University of Michigan, passed away January 19 at the age of 94. He was born in Clarinda, Iowa, in 1916. Moving to and growing up in Southern California, he graduated from Occidental College. He then attended Northwestern University Medical School where he earned an M.S. in Anatomy and also his M.D. He then did a residency in Neurophthalmology, earned his PhD, and taught in the Michigan Medical School. He was a member and past president of the American Ophthalmological Society and many other organizations. He helped found the Lions Eye Bank. Dr. Henderson was also a past chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the U of M. He was preceeded in death by his son, John H in 2006 and his wife of 68 years, Joyce H in Oct of 2010. He leaves one daughter, Louise McFarland (Richard) of Leesburg FL and three grandchildren: Tim McFarland (Lindsay) of Farmington Hills, MI, John McFarland (Sydney) of Cleveland OH, and Anne Louise McFarland of Tallahassee, FL. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1432 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor MI on Sunday, Feb 13th at 3:00 PM.
