

Mary Lou Unterburger, 90, died June 2, 2013, at Glacier Hills in Ann Arbor. She was born November 21, 1922, in Lakeview, CO, the daughter of J. Taylor and Nellie Bennett Wilkerson. She graduated from the University of Colorado in 1942. After serving as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy in World War II, she received a master’s in library science from Columbia University.
She went to work at the Detroit Public Library, where she met George W. Unterburger; they married in 1952. She retired from the library in 1989 as chief of the Campbell branch. In 1990 she and her husband moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor. In her retirement she was active in the Ann Arbor branch of the American Association of University Women and enjoyed traveling, including many trips around the country and also to the Czech Republic, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom. She is survived by four children, Helen (Melvin) Krejci, Amy (David Salamie), James (Junko Endo), and Thomas (Ellie); seven grandchildren, Thomas and Bonnie Krejci, Mary Luise Unterburger and Amelia Gregory, Taro and Kota Unterburger, and Claire Salamie; and two sisters-in-law, Joy Wilkerson and Irene Daiuto. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22 in the sanctuary at the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor. Memorial tributes may be made to the Ann Arbor branch of the AAUW.
