Noreen Carrigan passed away peacefully on November 6, 2019. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends that were the hallmark of her life. Noreen was born on April 16, 1937 to A. Neil & Pauline Gustine at the University of Michigan hospital where she began a wonderful life anchored in Ann Arbor, Mi.
Noreen was an avid and accomplished athlete from the start. She loved tennis, golf, hiking, and many other outdoor activities. She served as President of the Ann Arbor High School Girls Athletic Club during a time when women’s access to sports was limited. To compensate, Noreen regularly beat the boys from the varsity team.
As member of the class of 1955, Noreen had the distinction of being among the final attendees of the old Ann Arbor High School on the corner of State and Huron Streets. She graduated from The University of Wisconsin with a BA in English in 1959. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and began a lifelong affiliation with the Kappas, serving as a graduate advisor to the University of Michigan chapter for many years. Following Wisconsin, she obtained her teaching certificate and began her career as a grade-school teacher.
In 1960 Noreen met Leo J. Carrigan and started the relationship that would define her adult life. They married in 1962 and began a journey that was filled with love, laughter, children, and travels across the world. Noreen was an active member of many Ann Arbor organizations, and she loved her PEO sisters.
Long, loving relationships dominated Noreen’s life. She cherished many fifty plus year friendships, including those dating to her grade school days and summer camp. She loved spending time with friends and family and was always there for others in time of crisis.
While Noreen suffered ill-health in her last few years, she never lost her positive, indominable spirit. She remained active to the last days of her life, reveling in the company of friends and family. Many medical treatments were accelerated or cancelled to ensure she could attend her regularly scheduled lunches and hair appointments.
Noreen was preceded in death by her husband (Leo), Parents (Neil & Pauline Gustine), and Brother (Bruce Gustine). She is survived by her sister (Barbara Beaumont), three children (Linda Daley, David and Mark) and six grandchildren (Patrick, Gus, Julia, Meghan, Leo, & Ryann). Visitation will be held at Muehlig Funeral Home on November 25 from 5 - 7 pm. The funeral will be held at St Mary’s Catholic Church on November 26 at 10 am, with a reception to follow at the Ann Arbor City Club. Donations can be made to Catholic Social Services, 4925 Packard St., Ann Arbor MI.
