Age 95, passed away peacefully on Friday February 21, 2020. He was born on March 6, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Anthony and Hattie (Van Dyk) Lootens. Tom attended the University of Michigan in the Naval ROTC and mechanical-industrial engineering, the classes of 1945 and 1947. His naval tour of duty ended August 1946 and he was also called up while in the reserves for the Korean War for two years ending August 1953. He crossed the Pacific 22 times. In 1951 Tom married Enid Trelour of Detroit, MI, formerly of Cornwall, England. For most of his career he sold insurance and became an independent agent and CLU, working until he was age 90. Tom was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church of Royal Oak and attended numerous annual meetings of the National Association of Congregational Churches. As a graduate of U of M, Tom was a loyal fan of the Wolverines football team until the end. He enjoyed playing tennis and swimming, which he continued late into life, and many travels, especially cruises. He was preceded in death by his wife Enid of 67 years and siblings Anna Ruth, Ivan, and Katherine. He leaves behind his three children, Thomas (Peggy Burman), David, and Janet (Philip) Chen; four grandchildren, Meghan, Aileen, Daena, and Dylan; four great-grandchildren, Katelynn, Aislyn, Rikki, and Athena; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to First Congregational Church or a charity of choice.
