

Ann Marie Beal, a resident of Annapolis for 57 years passed away peacefully in her sleep at Seasons Hospice, Sinai Hospital on August 12, 2016. Born February 25, 1931 in Bridgeport Connecticut, she is predeceased by her loving parents Thomas McGovern and Anne McGrath and her brother William, who died at birth. Education was a force in Ann Marie’s life: she was a graduate of Lauralton Hall Catholic School for Girls and earned a BA in French and English from the College of New Rochelle. After a trip to Europe she attended Marquette University where she completed her MA in English. She also studied at Laval University (Quebec), and the University of Birmingham (UK). Ann Marie’s interests included: singing, swimming, traveling, drama and writing. She loved to proof read and wrote publicity articles for many local groups. She organized Catholic Daughters Communion Breakfasts with speakers from near and far, enjoyed years of working with the Knights of Columbus/Catholic Daughters annual Carnival, and was a member of the Saint Mary’s choir and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. In her later life she developed a keen interest in tracing her Irish ancestry and hoped that the younger generations of the family would continue her research. Ann Marie moved to Washington DC in the 1950’s where she fell in love with the culture and met her future husband, George W Beal III to whom she was married for 52 years until his death. They raised their 3 children here in Annapolis. Ann Marie is survived by her children: Margaret Beal, George W Beal IV, and Laura Beal Ellis. She also leaves her five grandchildren: Garrett and John Paul Abel, Chelsea and Sarah Beal, Thomson W Ellis and one great granddaughter, Makenzie Abel. Mom was blessed with compassionate caregivers: Deborah and TeShanna. Ann Marie spent over 30 years as an adjunct faculty member of Anne Arundel Community College where she tutored in the writing center. She loved working with students and teaching them the joy of writing. She developed lasting relationships with many students, some of whom now live as far away as Turkey. Prior to working at the community college she researched urban planning for the state of Maryland, was the managing editor for the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, and was a linguist for the CIA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 am Saturday August 20th at Saint Mary’s Church Duke of Gloucester Annapolis, MD. Wake will be held Friday August 19th John M Taylor Funeral Home 2-4pm and 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Saint Vincent de Paul Society, and the Saint Mary’s Angel Fund.
