Brent H. Matherly, a longtime resident of Annapolis, Maryland passed away suddenly on February 5, 2026, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He lived in Annapolis with his beloved partner of 14 years, Robin Scullin, and their two golden retrievers, Sammy and Blue. A memorial service will be held on May 16, 2026, at 11 am at St Anne’s Parish, Church Circle in Annapolis.
Born in Towson, Maryland, Brent was the son of John and Barbara Matherly. He spent his early years in Maryland with his brother Kirk and sister Brooke as well as time in Old Saybrook and Westbrook, Connecticut and abroad in Germany, where he attended the Rhein-Main Junior High School. He later graduated from Sherwood High School in Olney, Maryland.
Brent’s connection to the Pine Grove Association in Falls Village, Connecticut began as an infant and remained a constant in his life where he enjoyed many summers. Established as a Methodist Camp in 1871, Brent spent time at the Grove and surrounding Litchfield County fishing, hiking and enjoying the fresh air with his grandfather Thurber, grandmother Dorothy and his parents Barbara and Joe at their cottage. In 2022, he and Robin fulfilled a dream purchasing their own cottage at the Grove, “Pineappolis.”
For college, Brent attended the University of Maryland where he studied business, history and creative writing and was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. Then, at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Maintenance Management in 1996. Brent’s lifelong love of aviation began early, inspired by visits to Sikorsky Aircraft in Connecticut and time spent flying with his grandfather “Thurb” in his prop plane along the East Coast.
Brent served his country with distinction in the United States Army, both in active duty and the National Guard. He served as an Aeromedical Evacuation Officer and a Rotary Wing Aviator in Korea. In Panama from 1989-90, he served in Operation Just Cause to depose General Manuel Noriega as a crew chief and later as a warrant officer. He earned numerous honors including the Air Medal, multiple Army Commendation and Achievement Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, the Army Aviator Badge, a Parachutist Badge, and an Air Assault Badge. Later, he was named National Guard Soldier of the Year in 1994 and received a special award for “patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities” from the President of the United States and the Secretary of the Army in 1996. He retired honorably as a U.S. Army Captain.
Following his military service, Brent built a successful career in pharmaceutical sales and healthcare leadership, including at Pfizer where he was named to the Circle of Excellence for Outstanding Professional Achievements in 2003. He then moved to Annapolis and worked as Vice President in Development at Washington Adventist Hospital and then at the Center for Vein Restoration. In the past decade, Brent dedicated his career to eldercare, leading the marketing and community outreach at several top facilities in the Annapolis and Severna Park areas including Charter Senior Living, Bay Village and most recently, Spring Arbor Senior Living. He cared deeply about the residents and families, bringing compassion and energy to their daily lives.
Brent had a full life outside of work and especially enjoyed time and many activities with his sons, Tom and Jim. Brent was an avid fisherman who cast his line in the lakes and rivers of Deep River, Lakeville and Kent Falls, CT and Umphachene Falls, MA; in the Chesapeake Bay, Katama Bay, Martha’s Vineyard and Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod; into the waves of Oregon Inlet in Hatteras, North Carolina and the seas of Vero Beach, Florida. Most times, he brought home a bucketful of bluefish, wahoo or trout.
He was a passionate cook known for gathering family and friends around meals – whether it was his Old Bay steamed crabs, steaks on the grill or a Thanksgiving feast. His cast irons frying pans numbered 6 at last count.
A dedicated sailor, Brent found joy on the water whether a day trip to St. Michael’s, offshore racing, or boat deliveries in Newport and Bermuda. He embraced the camaraderie and adventure of sailing life – often serving as the volunteer cook along the way in many J/120 galleys.
Brent was deeply committed to his community. He was an active member of St Anne’s Parish, Eastport Yacht Club, and the Fleet Reserve Club of Annapolis. He served as a chaplain for the Annapolis Masonic Lodge No 89. Most recently, Brent led the Alzheimer’s support group in Annapolis, offering comfort to impacted family members.
Above all, Brent was devoted to the people he loved. In addition to Robin and sons, Tom Matherly, age 27 (Atalya) of Princeton, NJ, James “Jim” Matherly, age 23 of McLean, VA; he is survived by his brother Kirk Matherly (Sandra) of Marburg, Germany, his sister Brooke Stull (Eli), niece Chamberlain, age 18 and nephew Holden, age 16 of Glen Allen, VA; his mother Barbara and stepfather, Joseph Weikel of Bridgeville, Delaware and Pine Grove, Connecticut, and his cherished golden retrievers, Sammy and Blue. He was predeceased by his beloved dogs Bailey and Maggie.
Brent will be remembered for his warmth, his generosity, his adventurous spirit, and the way he brought people together – whether on the water, around a table, or in the quiet moments that mattered most.
