

Corinne Skirvin Niemela, age 86, died on June 2, 2014 at Ginger Cove Health Center of natural causes. Previously of Wheaton, MD, Corinne was a 22 year resident of Annapolis. Born in Cincinnati, OH to the late James and Anna Mae Skirvin, Corrine was a Registered Nurse graduating from the Alachua County Hospital School of Nursing, Gainesville, FL, in 1949. During her career she was an operating room nurse at Duke University, New York Hospital as well as hospitals in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, University of Florida and Graceline cruise ships, retiring from Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD. Corinne participated in neurosurgical research at Duke and strongly encouraged and assisted in the higher education of her children, all of whom achieved doctorate degrees in engineering, medicine and music. She enjoyed dancing, music, camping, world travel and reading. In 1958 Corinne married Roy Waldemar Niemela who preceded her in death in 1986. Together they had 3 children; Van Niemela of Richardson, TX, Douglas Niemela of Seattle, WA and Suzanne Niemela of Annapolis, MD. She is also survived by 2 granddaughters, Corinne and Kira Willard of Annapolis. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at John M. Taylor Funeral Home chapel, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 2:00 P.M.
