Born February 19, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida into a Navy family, Dave was a proud career Naval Surface Warfare Officer who loved being at sea and serving with his crew. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967 and took his first command in March of 1972 as a Lieutenant on the USS WELCH (PG 93) operating in Vietnam. He also served as Chief Engineer on USS DAVIDSON (FF1045) and USS HARRY E. HUBBARD (DD748), Executive Officer on USS TALBOT (FFG4) and finally Commanding Officer of USS MONONGAHELA (AO178).
When not at sea, he held positions in the Pentagon and the Naval Academy where he retired in 1992 from the position of the Director of Candidate Guidance after 25 years of Naval Service. Not one to stray too far from the Navy, he traded his uniform in for a coat and tie and began his second career at the Naval Academy Athletic Association, ultimately rising to the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director. Dave’s love for the Navy was only outweighed be his love for his family. He was always by his wife Susan’s side at social events, hosting dinner parties, and attending Navy and Ravens football games. In addition, he passed on his love of the Navy to his son who he proudly watched graduate from the Naval Academy in 2000 and later earn his wings as a Naval Aviator. Dave now reunites with his love Susan and their many cats. He is survived his son CDR Glenn Davis and Glenn’s wife Caroline, sister Bonnie Harrison and her husband Hunter, his nieces Lindsey and Lex, his nephew Will, and his grandchildren Grayson, Aiden, and Harper.
