As a family, our most treasured, most hilarious, and most legendary memories have Galen at their center. He saw others through a lens that never judged and always cared. Galen’s heart knew no limits and he was known to literally give the shirt off his back or the shoes off his feet to strangers in need. He saw humor in the smallest acts and his laugh was impossible to resist. His smile, like his heart, lit up the world for those around him. He had a beautiful gentle soul, sweet smile, and crazy eyebrows.
Galen was a masterful chef, a talented artist, beautiful poet, and exceptional teacher. He also was a fearless athlete, loved speed, and at the age of four earned his first bike racing trophy. He could make his snowboard seem more like a hover board flying off ledges and down mountains before the rest of us left the lift. He loved all things motorized from the first go-kart from Pop-Pop to a four wheeler from Grandpa Keith, to a Jeep from his dad, taking them up mountains, down rivers and through impossible obstacles, always with a “come-along” handy. Galen loved inventing games and gadgets, and taught his son how to build epic forts, drive jet skis, construct bike ramps for the neighborhood, and fight like a Ninja Turtle.
Galen’s journey in this life also came with unfathomable pain and struggle. He fought his disease heroically and often alone but he never stopped fighting. He loved his son Kingston Galen Meehan with every fiber of his being and they shared a deep and special bond. He also was immensely proud of his sisters Rebecca Keys Fraser Meehan and Sarah (Sally) Aileen Kirk Meehan. They often spoke of having a lifelong debt to “ our big brother who always took the bullets for us, sacrificing his own wellbeing for us all our lives.” Galen always felt blessed to have the unwavering love of his family including his mother Sarah Meehan and father Gregory Vincent Meehan, and felt deeply for those without family.
Galen is rejoined in the next world with his wife Melody Dawn Hitesman who he missed every day.
The family respectfully requests to mourn this immense loss in private until they can make plans for public remembrance. For those who wish to honor his memory, please consider a contribution to the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC) designated for Galen’s Gift, a Donor Advised Fund established in memory of Gregory Galen Meehan. The fund will provide support to organizations and programs addressing the causes that touched Galen’s heart deeply including poverty, legal aid, homelessness, and mental health and addiction.
