Kurt Richard Shovestul, a man of deep faith, a cherished family member, and a respected member of his community, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, at the age of 69. He died following a long and courageous battle with cancer, having faced the disease over six years, including four recurrences, with remarkable strength. Born on May 29, 1956, he was a lifelong Annapolitan and built a successful 30-year career with the Department of Defense.
Kurt’s life was marked by a deep commitment to personal growth, and he met each day with intention and quiet discipline, finding purpose in connection and service to others. He was a pillar of hope in every community he touched, including his lifelong church, Trinity United Methodist, as well as numerous other organizations grounded in fellowship and support. A constant and reassuring presence to those around him, he became a trusted mentor and friend, always ready with encouragement, a helping hand, or a moment of lightness that could ease any burden.
He was also a passionate car enthusiast and found great joy in restoring vehicles and bringing them back to life, including his red BMW 3 Series convertible, which he was often seen driving around town. He found similar passion in collecting and playing the drums, often accompanied by classic rock music.
Above all, Kurt was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Charlotte, and his two children, Matthew (and his wife, little Charlotte or “LC”) and Bridget, whom he loved without reservation. He is also predeceased by his siblings, Lynn (John) and Paul Jr. (Maryann). He was an unwavering husband, father, brother, and friend whose love anchored those around him and was deeply felt in return; he will be missed beyond measure.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 2–5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, with burial at Lakemont Memorial Gardens at noon.
