Laura Wilson Huyett was born in Charlottesville, VA on September 27, 1956 to her parents, Dick and Anne Wilson. She was the second of six, her siblings are Julie, Mark, Jeff, Ellen and Matt. She grew up in the Baltimore and Washington suburbs. She attended Mary Washington University and majored in music – class of 1978, go Eagles!
After college she moved to Washington DC and worked for the National Symphony Orchestra. She met Jay through Young Life, and they were married in 1982. They moved to Annapolis in 1985 where they bought their first and only house on McKendree Ave. They have three children, J.B., Alison, and Julianne.
Laura had a love for animals and nature; she grew up with birds, two dogs (Ripper and Ripper Two), a monkey, and a horse named Rose. As a family, the Huyett’s had many cats – Cleo, Coconut, Scotty and Teasel – and two dogs – Tansy (with her in heaven) and Tucker. They also had many gerbils and one bunny that was not very nice even though its name was Dandy.
Jay and Laura loved camping, backpacking, road trips and traveling to Europe. They passed that love onto their children. Laura loved opera, classical music, the book Les Misérables, musicals with Gene Kelly, Ben Hur (book and movie), Mulan, and especially jellybeans. She was a lover of flowers and managed to get eight orchids and a peony bush to bloom every year. She loved art, seeing it in museums and making doodles of her own. Laura was an incredible cook and her love for food grew while working for Palette Pleasers for 10 years, she passed her love for cooking and food to her kids. She loved 2-4 year olds and cherished her time working at the Naval Academy Primary School for over 10 years, telling stories about the adventures of Tucker and Teasel during nap time.
Laura loved Jesus. Her faith carried her through three brain surgeries over 20 years and the teenage years of three children with only one bathroom. She took part in many bible studies over the years where she met some of her dearest friends. Though she didn’t always complete the readings, she loved talking about the Bible and meeting friends through Christ. Jay and Laura were a large part of Young Life in Anne Arundel County, they’ve been on Committee since 1986.
And she loved her family - her husband Jay; her son J.B., his wife Baylie and their son Arlo; her daughter Alison and her husband Seth; and her daughter Julianne, her husband J.B. and their twin daughters, Quinn and Everly. And of course, her dog Tucker, who she gave all her leftovers to and was the best dog in the entire world who could do no wrong. She relished her role as Geemi (pronounced Jimmy) and loved to make up adventure stories and songs to sing to her grandchildren.
She was never afraid of death and always knew where she was headed. Laura’s passing is another transition from this life to her new life in Heaven. She always wanted her passing to be a celebration of life and love and to be surrounded by friends and family. She will be deeply missed by her family but they will relish in the amazing memories they have of the fun, kind, creative, adventurous, silly, loving woman that Laura Wilson Huyett was.
