Markella was born in Beirut, Lebanon where she attended the Greek School of Beirut. Markella and her family moved to the island of Chios in Greece in 1967. The family then immigrated to Annapolis, Maryland in 1971 where Markella attended St. Mary’s High School. She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Master of Art History degree. Markella worked in many Annapolis businesses like Café Normandy and Art Things before finding work with the federal government as a language analyst.
Her family, her cats, her jewelry-making business, the arts, and the company of others were all joys that Markella held close to her heart. She was both kind and strong-willed, known for her welcoming, vibrant personality and dedication to other people. She was an excellent cook and a friend to everyone.
Markella is survived by her two sons, Julian and Jack, her step-daughter Megan, her husband Tony, and her brother Argyris. She will be missed by many, especially her niece and nephews, whom she adored as her own children—Sophia, Corina, Logan, Andrew, Kosta, and Yanni.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Wellness House of Annapolis.
Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite Allekram Designs creation to the visitation and memorial service.
