As a young merchant seaman during World War II, he served in the fabled “Mosquito Fleet” in South America, sailed around the world, and survived a marine disaster. After completing military service with the United Nations Forces in Korea, Bob attended the University of Maryland where he received B.S. and M.A. degrees in economics. His professional career was with the Federal Government in Washington, D.C., from which he retired in 1988.
After retirement, Bob and his wife, Sibylle, enjoyed extensive travel and boating in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic coast. They lived in Annapolis, MD overlooking the South River.
Bob kept up his interest in ships and sailing, building a number of elaborate models. His work culminated with several years of researching, designing, and building a large model of a 15th century Chinese “Treasure Ship” which is currently on display at the Ginger Cove Retirement Community.
Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sibylle Sampson.
Bob and Sibylle have been longtime residents of Annapolis and those who wish may donate to Historic Annapolis Foundation, 8 Pinkney St., Annapolis, MD 21401, www.annapolis.org or to Historic Londontown Foundation, 839 Londontown Rd, Edgewater, MD 21307, www.historiclondontown.org.
