Maureen Spaulding Allen, affectionately known as “Mo” by her grandchildren, began her heavenly journey on November 25, 2024. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on May 24, 1937, Maureen grew up in Yorkshire, England where she was accepted on merit to Hemsworth Grammar School. After World War II, she emigrated to America, disembarking a passenger liner in New York, wearing a cotton dress, a hat, a camel coat, and carrying a single small suitcase. She had $12 in her pocket.
Months later, she began working for the Atlanta division of Avon as a bookkeeper, sharing an apartment with two girlfriends on Peachtree Hills. A chance meeting at a weekend party introduced her to a handsome U.S. Navy submariner on leave from Charleston. Maureen and Alton were married at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Peachtree Road on July 6, 1957, surrounded by friends. George R. Hooper, Sr. gave her away.
Maureen and Alton’s married life began in Miami, Florida. Later, they would return to Alton’s hometown of Anniston where Maureen continued her career with local engineering firms and 14 Purser Steel Company, before joining the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office for the United States Army at the Anniston Ordinance Depot. She was a member of, and officer for, the local chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction and Pilot International.
A member of the Church of the Good Shepherd (PCUSA) in Golden Springs, Maureen enjoyed teaching elementary-age Sunday School and playing dominoes with her church friends. She especially loved gardening and watching Masterpiece Theater, British crime shows, and golf with Alton.
Maureen is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Marion Alton Allen, her mother, Jacobina Douglas Spaulding, and her brother, Leslie James Douglas Spaulding. She is survived by her daughter Lesley Cole (Sewanee, TN), grandchildren Meagan Cole Remmes (Mike) of Chattanooga, and Geoffrey Cole (Kristine) of Lake Forest, CA, and her great-granddaughter, Sophia Rose Cole.
The family is forever grateful to the many angels—both professionals and family friends—who watched over and cared for Maureen in recent years.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Gray Brown Service with a graveside service immediately following. Memorial remembrances may be made to The Presbyterian Home for Children (Talladega, Alabama) or the Alzheimer’s Association of Alabama.
