Al was born at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago on January 9th, 1943. He was the son of Frank and Estelle Sevcik. He was raised in Elmwood Park along with his older brother, George. He attended St. Celestine Catholic School and later graduated in the first graduating class of Elmwood Park High School. He enjoyed his time at school while also playing on the football team.
Shortly after graduation, Al enlisted in the Army. He spent time training in Missouri and Indiana before shipping out to Ansbach, Germany. After 3 years in the Army, Al sailed back to civilian life in America. He soon found employment at Pioneer Bank. More importantly, he found the love of his life, Judy Miller. They married on April 24th of 1965, the beginning of 46 years of joy together.
They purchased their first home at 1441 Cora in Des Plaines. They would live there for 21 years. Julie was born soon afterwards and their loving family was complete. The home was the site of many: family birthday parties, garage sales, and great memories for Al, Judy, Julie, and their first dog Tasha and their second dog Nadia.
Al also started his career working in the graphics department at the Daily Herald around the start of the 1970’s. He would stay with the Herald for the rest of his working career. Family members enjoyed calling him at work because he would inevitably answer with a bellowing “GRAPHICS!”.
Al enjoyed playing softball, horseshoes, and bowling. However, his favorite hobby was spending time with his family.
Al and Judy moved to 285 Marshall in a different part of Des Plaines. Their third dog, Maddie, loved the large backyard. Soon afterwards, Julie met Don Willett. Within a few years they married on July 22nd, 1995. Two grandsons soon arrived, Matthew on October 4th, 1998 and Andrew on March 1st, 2001. Al and Judy were proud grandparents. They loved attending all of their numerous school and sporting events. Matthew and Andrew were their pride and joy.
Al lost the love of his life, Judy, on September 9th, 2011. Al remained close with Julie, Don, Matthew, and Andrew. He continued to attend all games as the boys continued to play in high school. He also attended many of Matt’s games when he pitched at Carthage College. He came over to Julie and Don’s house daily to walk their dogs, Mush and later Willow, while they were teaching.
Al battled a rapid onset of dementia over the past several months of his life. He lived with Julie and Don for the final weeks of his life. Although he was dealing with dementia, he still displayed his familiar zest for life.
Al passed away suddenly on October 31st, 2024 at the age of 81 years old.
Everyone whose life he touched will miss him. He will always remain in the hearts and memories of those he loved.
Lovingly remembered by: Julie (daughter) Don (son-in-law) Matthew and Andrew (grandsons)
