Of Arlington Heights
Anthony "Tony" Sulla was born on September 2, 1928 in Chicago to Salvatore and Maria (nee Padula) Sulla. He died Saturday, May 8, 2021 in Wheeling.
Mr. Sulla worked as a Graphic Artist for WGN for 34 years, then 10 years with the Daily Herald.
He was a pioneer in television graphic arts and taught fundamentals of design at Columbia College and was an instructor of television graphics at the School at the Art Institute of Chicago. Also, he was “Uncle Tony” on the “Wee Ones World”, a religious program for children, for the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Tony was a member of St. Edna’s Catholic Church in Arlington Heights, Knights of Columbus Council #4483 and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 4th Degree Assembly. Also, for St. Edna’s he served as an eucharistic minister and painted backdrops for St. Edna's Snack Theater.
While at WGN Channel 9 in Chicago, Tony’s work was viewed by millions of viewers. Most notably, the book covers used in “Family Classics” weekly movie series and the hand painted weather maps created for the 9 PM news. Tony often added beautiful additions to the weather maps to celebrate events like Mother’s Day, the first day of spring, and other holidays and events.
He was a member of the Art Directors Club of Chicago, past president of the Society of Typographical Arts, and past president of Kiwanis Lakeview Chapter.
Tony loved being a Mended Hearts volunteer at Northwest Community Hospital, being a Santa’s helper for many years, and gardening. He was an avid viewer of Turner Classic Movies and CSPAN, and often practiced his art by sketching the proceedings. “Poppy” loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren, attending many school concerts and plays. Tony would often end conversations with “mantieni la forza” (Italian for “maintain strength”) or simply “Peace.” He will be greatly missed.
Anthony is survived by his spouse of 65 years Jo Ann (nee Mowry); children, Thomas (Debra), Daniel (Deanne), and Robert (Leslie) Sulla; grandchildren, Catherine, Erin, Matthew, and Elizabeth Sulla; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Salvatore and Michael Sulla.
