Despite having been in school together since the second grade, Beverly met the love of her life, Ronald Gibson, as a young adult in a bar in Milwaukee. They married on June 19, 1965, and had three children, Jodi, Sarah and John. Together they built a life focused on family, education, hard work, compassion and generosity. Ron’s career took the Gibson family to Minneapolis and later to the Chicago area where Ron and Bev lived until their deaths.
An avid reader and naturally curious, Beverly loved mystery fiction, history, English literature and current affairs. She enjoyed every Agatha Christie novel and filled her house with books. She spent Sundays reading every page of the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times, completing even the most difficult crossword puzzles in record time. Her love of reading inspired her to take a mystery fiction class at Harper College where she earned her associate’s degree as an adult. Beverly later received her bachelor’s degree with honors from Barat College in Lake Forest and her master’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago. She also studied abroad at the prestigious University of Oxford in England.
In addition to reading, she loved collecting dolls and pretty things. She created a home that was beautifully decorated, warm, welcoming and filled with her favorite belongings.
Beverly was very compassionate and believed deeply in the dignity of all people. Together with her husband, she supported a variety of charities serving poor, hungry and homeless people. She lived her values, inspiring her children to do the same.
In her later years, Beverly enjoyed a simple life at home cared for by her daughters and her caregivers, Myra Viola and Amy. The family would especially like to express its deepest gratitude to Myra for the loving care she provided to Bev for five years.
A caring, smart and generous woman, family was very important to Beverly. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Beverly is survived by her children Jodi Gibson, Sarah (James) Grulke and John (Kristen) Gibson; her grandchildren Samantha Grulke, Abigail Gibson and Connor Gibson; and her siblings Georgette (William) Jozwowski, Robert (Debra) Bett, Barbara (Jay Jackson) Bett and Aggie (Steve) Hale.
She is preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Bett; her parents, George and Helen Bett; and her husband, Ronald James Gibson, whom her family knows welcomed her to heaven.
