Of Elk Grove Village
Ernest (Ernie) Michaels was born on January 18, 1930, in Chicago, IL to Edwin and Agnes (nee Czaja) Michaels. He passed away on December 21, 2023, at his home surrounded by loving family.
Ernie loved to entertain people with his beloved banjo - he took part in many parades, senior center gigs, and other events throughout his life. He was the leader of the Windy City Jammers and loved playing with them every Monday night at many restaurants throughout the years, most recently at Chief O’Neill’s. He loved the music and he loved the camaraderie.
Ernie worked as a Commissioned Driver for Pepsi Cola for 36 years, making many friends at the various stores as he always delivered the pop cases with a smile. He often referred to himself as the ‘Flower of the Beverage World’ to get the positive reaction from his customers and make everyone’s day a little better.
He worked out for many years at the Elk Grove Pavilion where he held court from his stationary bike discussing politics, music, religion, or whatever topic came up. He respected people, no matter their religion, their politics, their station in life – he always had a kind word for everyone.
He was a former member of the Elk Grove Village Lions club as he enjoyed giving back to the community, helping with Lions Candy Day, and participating in the 4th of July celebrations with banjo sing-a-longs.
On any day, at any time, at any place if anyone asked: “How are you doing Ernie?” he would look up with a big smile and say “Fantastic!”
Ernie is survived by his wife of more than 10 years Margaret (nee Lorincz) Michaels; his son Dale (Susan) Michaels; his grandchildren Daxton and Delaney Michaels; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 57 years, Gene Michaels (nee Omernik); his daughter Linda (late John) Colonna; his parents as well as his siblings Ralph (late Louise) Michaels, Earl Michaels and Audrey (late John) Ward.
Ernie was a loving, encouraging, supporting partner to both Margaret and Gene; a loving supportive best friend to his son Dale (Sue); and a caring grandfather to Daxton and Delaney.
