Leonard was a loving husband to Phyllis Gontjes. They were married on June 16, 1960. He was a devoted father to his children: Jim (Jill) Gontjes, Brian Gontjes, Joel (Jennifer) Gontjes, and Beth Gontjes. He cherished his six grandchildren: Jaymes (Taryn), Kate, Kyle (Abby), Jansen (Amber), Rob (Marilyn), and Emma. Leonard was survived by three great grandchildren: Dempsey, Phoenix, and Hollyn. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Gontjes, and his beloved wife, Phyllis.
Leonard was the cherished brother to his late sister, Marilla (Jake) Heidebrink, and his sister Barbara (Roy) Marinchek.
In his free time, Leonard enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He spent many summer weekends camping in Wisconsin. Right up to the end, playing bingo was one of his favorite pastimes. These hobbies brought him joy and relaxation throughout his life.
Leonard was a dedicated employee of American Airlines from 1961 to 2008. His job afforded him the opportunity to travel all over the world with his family. He passed on his love for travel to his children and grandchildren.
Leonard faithfully attended Arlington Heights Evangelical Free Church, (now known as The Orchard), during his adult life. He will be fondly remembered for his dedication to his family, his commitment to his career, and his love for his hobbies. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The visitation will be at 9:30AM to 11:00AM on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at the Orchard, Arlington Heights campus, 1330 N Douglas Ave. Arlington Heights, IL 60004, followed by a funeral service at 11:00AM. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Heights, 2501 E Euclid Ave, Arlington Heights, IL 60005.
