Patricia "Pat" F. Monaghan

of Palatine

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted friend, Patricia "Pat" F. Monaghan, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at JourneyCare Hospice in Barrington, Illinois.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 12, 1938, to the late Charles and Bessie (née Stiles) McCourt, Pat embraced life with a spirit of kindness and unwavering devotion to those around her.

Pat’s life took a beautiful turn when she met Richard Monaghan. Their love quickly blossomed, leading to a long and cherished marriage on February 13, 1960. Together, they built a rich life, creating homes and memories in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and finally settling in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. She later moved to Palatine, Illinois, where she made many friends living at The Grand at Twin Lakes.

Pat was a woman of remarkable dedication, balancing her deep commitment to family with a fulfilling career and a profound desire to serve others. Her professional journey began as a Catholic school teacher and evolved through various administrative roles in banking, finance, healthcare, retail, and the public sector. Even into her later years, Pat continued to contribute her talents as a valued secretary at St. Mary Parish in Buffalo Grove.

Her dedication to her community was truly extraordinary. Pat’s extensive volunteer work touched countless lives, from her leadership as PTA President to her service as an Emergency First Responder and even acting in community theater. However, it was at St. Mary Parish where her spirit shone brightest. Her involvement was immeasurable, a testament to her deep faith which served as a constant guide.

During her free time,Pat found joy in the artistry of quilting and sewing. In her teens, she loved to dance. In fact, while attending West Philadelphia Catholic Girls’ High School in Philadelphia, she was one of the original dancers on American Bandstand, which was broadcast daily nearby. In her adult years, she remained active, learning to play golf and the piano. In her later years, she treasured the laughter and connection shared with family and friends, especially during spirited games of Words with Friends, Flinch, and Rummikub.

Pat’s vibrant legacy continues through her loving family: her children, John (Abigail) Monaghan, Thomas (the late Jennifer) Monaghan, Virginia “Ginni” (Michael) Gianneschi, and Dennis Monaghan; her 11 cherished grandchildren, Matthew (Carly) Monaghan, Kathleen Garren, Michael (Sarah) Gianneschi, Daniel (KC Stresak) Monaghan, Tony (Robyn) Gianneschi, Joseph (fiancée Danielle Correiar) Monaghan, Erin Monaghan, James Gianneschi, Meghan (Trevor) McMillen, Patrick Monaghan, and Griffin Monaghan; and her 11 adored great-grandchildren, Madison, Mackenzie, Riley, Blair, Emarie, Peyton, Dahlia, Madison, Emma, Sydney, and Rowan.

She was preceded in death by her four siblings: Catherine (Harold) Link, Charles (Mary) McCourt, Betty (Fred) Tyszko, and John (Janice) McCourt. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Richard Monaghan, whose memory remained a constant source of love and inspiration throughout her full and meaningful life. Pat will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Celebration of Life luncheon hosted by the family will take place April 26, 11:30 am, at Sal & Tony’s Italian Restaurant, 48 Raupp Blvd, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089. Internment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary Catholic Church, 10 N Buffalo Grove Rd, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089, (847) 541-1450 or www.stmarybg.org/donate.
