Growing up in Evanston IL, Richard enjoyed a close relationship with many aunts, uncles and cousins; in particular his brother Bill and cousin Mike Kowalczyk. They were known as the Three Musketeers during their childhood years and continued a close bond as adults.
Always the sports enthusiast, Richard played football and baseball throughout his youth, and then softball as an adult. He shared that skill and knowledge through his many years as a dedicated coach for youth sports. He was well respected by both parents and players, and fondly referred to as “Coach K.” He was a lifelong White Sox fan and attended many games with his son Matt.
Richard’s career at F&S Engraving spanned 50+ years before he retired in 2021. He was the key player in the development of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) capabilities for the company used to automate the Tool and Die process. In his free time, he loved to build and fix things around the house and spend time with family.
Richard is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Peterson) Kowalczyk, and children: Vicki (Kowalczyk) and Troy Kostak; Jennifer (Kowalczyk) and Mitch Carey; Matt and Carolyn Kowalczyk; Mark and Katy Riccio; Julie (Riccio) and Russell Berman; Jim and Ashley Riccio.
