He was an avid skier who felt most at peace in the mountains, gliding through fresh snow with a quiet joy that matched his adventurous spirit. A lifelong Ham radio operator—known by his call sign WB5-FZM—he found connection not just through the airwaves, but in every facet of his life. He had the rare gift of making anyone feel like a friend, no matter how brief the encounter.
He was a traveler, a lover of history, and a student of the world. His passion for learning was matched only by his love for science fiction—he could find as much wonder in a museum as he did in an episode of Star Trek. His mind was always open, always searching, always engaged. More than anything, he was a devoted husband to Susan Yvonne Villars Swanson, his partner and best friend who proceeded him in August of 2024. Their love was vibrant and steadfast, built on mutual zeal for adventure, laughter, and decades of shared memories. He was also a deeply loving father, whose presence was a constant source of strength, warmth, and unwavering support.
He leaves behind Erica Nicole Swanson Tyler (Arlington, TX), his good pup Pepper A. Dog Swanson (Arlington, TX) and a wide circle of family and friends who were forever changed by his boundless kindness and generous spirit. We will remember him for his curiosity, his compassion, and the way he lived life with purpose, integrity, and an open heart. He was the kind of person who left every place—and every person—a little better than he found them.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory by donating to Camp Fire El Tesoro de la Vida, or by simply doing something kind for someone else. That’s what he would have done.
