Dear Xie Lao,

When our Alumni Association decided to leave a note at your memorial, we immediately encountered a problem - we couldn't find the right English words to translate what we always called you. The vast English vocabulary can not describe your image in our hearts. 

We have more than 200 alumni in Fudan University Alumni Association of North Texas . We call each other Xuejie，Xuezhang，Xuedi, or Xuemei. You are the only one, that everyone respectfully calls “Xie Lao”. Not only because you are the most senior among us, but because you perfectly exemplified all the beauty of being a teacher and a friend.

You are the humorous and witty wedding witness to a Class ‘10 alumnus; You are the marvelous tenor at the alumni spring gala; You are the generous host for alumni who visited you. Every time we went to Arlington to meet you , we did not have one single chance to pay for the meals. You arrived the restaurant so early  to convince cashier to charge your credit card in advance, and you even prepared thoughtful gifts for everyone. ..

Our alumni group still keeps your WeChat avatar today. The tenderness you gave to each one of us, your genuine laughter, and your passionate singing 'Where the Peaches bloom' never fade away.

The 80+ years of wonderful life you have shared with us, whether it is a rich scientific and academic experience, or an unwavering attitude of modesty and optimism, are the pride of all Fudan alumni today.

always heard from my mom that uncle was planing to go to Shanghai for a long time after cancellation of 3-year travel policy, but it becomes unfulfilled wish. you are the only one in my elders who graduated from Chinese Ivy League school and known as scientist, we are proud of you and miss you forever.

My condolences to the passing of Guanghua Xie, my grandfather. He was a lively and well-informed person, keeping up with the daily news and always a prominent member of his circles. But most importantly, he loved his children and grandchildren and was a major part of our family. We will dearly miss him.

Our beloved Brother Xie, we have known and cherished you for decades in the church. In our hearts, your family has always been humble, gentle, kind, and faithful. Since you joined our life group, we have witnessed your spiritual growth. You diligently took notes on every Sunday sermon, and when you encountered scriptures you didn’t understand, you would immediately ask questions. You also took on the responsibility of sharing at the Seniors’ Fellowship, always preparing thoroughly for every session, never taking any opportunity to serve lightly. You have been a wonderful role model for all of us in serving God’s house!

This August, we had the honor of celebrating your 87th birthday with you over a meal, not knowing it would be our last time dining together.

Brother Xie, when you suddenly felt unwell and were transferred between two or three hospitals, we, along with the pastors, were blessed to be by your side. I, along with Wenhai, Xie Huan, and Wu Hong, witnessed your final breath on this earth. We grieved and wept, but we have the assurance that we will see you again in heaven! Brother Xie, you have finally laid down your earthly labors and entered into the banquet of Christ. We believe that on that day, Jesus Christ Himself stood at the gates of heaven to welcome you and reunite you with your dear wife. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Our beloved Brother Xie, we love you!

Dear Xie BoBo, my husband and I ran into you by chance at Costco last summer. We hadn’t seen you for a couple of years and you looked healthy and in good spirits. You mentioned that you just attended the International Fiends Fellowship. We could tell that you enjoyed the gathering of brothers and sisters in the Lord very much! Never thought this would be the last time we talked to you......

In the hospital on October 3, with your beloved daughter Huan and beloved friends, we said goodbye to you reluctantly. The Chaplain also came to pray for you, family and friends. You breathed your last breath, gave up labor on earth, and entered the arms of the Lord who loves you!

This separation is temporary, because we will meet again in heaven in the future. God has prepared the most beautiful eternal place in heaven for the those who believe in Him. It is a place without disease, pain, death, sorrow and crying. What an incomparably better place! “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death, nor mourning, nor crying, nor pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

Guang will be deeply missed at International Friends where he faithfully attended English classes. He was always learning and working on his pronunciation. His love for God and others was evident in his gentle spirit that touched our lives in many ways. He was a true friend.

Mr. Xie was not only a gentle, deep-thinking, wise, and measured person, but he was also a good person who believed in Jesus.   We will miss him a lot.

I knew Professor Xia when I was a PhD student in Institute of Chemistry, CAS in 1985. He was a research associate professor then in our analytical department. He had a team for his research and was very active in our department. Therefore we had some cummunications on research and other issues. He was a very nice person and easy to communicate. I also used instruments in his lab occationally. He really loved his research. I called him for several times when I came to US. We greeted each other during holiday seasons. Now he went to heaven. Wish him to find a new research field there and continue to do his favor study!

Mr. Xie was a big part of our family’s life despite being brought together by circumstance. He greatly helped my wife and I navigate adulthood in the US and beginning our family here, and was a fantastic friend to us. He often held my children when they were young, and they loved being around him. His comforting presence remained in our thoughts even after moving apart and will continue to stay in our hearts forever

No word can describe how much I love you, dad! I am so lucky to be your daughter: To learn the life lesson from your wisdom, to share laughs and tears with you, to travel with you and see the world, to get your advices whenever I need. I promised mom to take care of you 10 years ago and it is my greatest honor I could do that. I know you miss her so much and therefore you decided to leave in a hurry to see her. Dad, life is a journey. You had an amazing life.  Dad, you moved to heaven, but you will stay in my heart forever. Love you so much!!!

Grandpa, we'll always miss you and remember you in everything we do. I remember how your face would light up when we took you to go to restaurants and on trips, or even when we'd pay a small visit to you during the day.  I even remember how stubborn you would be when we tried to give you gifts or help you with tasks that you wanted to do by yourself. In every step of our lives, you were there to support us. Everywhere we look, there's a memory lingering with you in it. The love, wisdom, and knowledge that you've given to me and our family will always be appreciated and never forgotten.
