

John was born October 23, 1940 to parents, Emmett McMahon and Robbie Ackers.
John and Mary met at a movie theatre when they were 19 years old in 1960. Mary worked as a cashier selling tickets and John was the doorman who tore the ticket.
John attended Lamar College (now Lamar University) and graduated in June 1963 with a BS in Chemistry. In August 1963, John and Mary were married. Afterwards, John and Mary left Port Arthur for Baton Rouge where John took biology classes at LSU. During this time their daughter and first child Laura was born.
After college, John joined the US Air Force and graduated from OTS (officer training school) as a 2nd LT. He was stationed within the States for a couple of years before he was assigned to Thailand for one year (1967-1968), supporting the Vietnam war. During his deployment his second child Todd was born.
After Thailand, John was assigned to Ramstein and later to Hahn Air Bases in Germany for five years. His family was with him in Germany where his third child Patrick was born. He loved his assignment in Germany because he used his interest in history to tour many historic places in Europe with his family.
John also was interested in photography as was his wife, Mary. They joined the Ft Worth camera club where they enjoyed the numerous camera club outings and friendships they developed. They included their interest of photography in their travels.
John and Mary had three children; Laura, Todd, and Patrick. John helped Patrick with enjoying astronomy and combining photography and astronomy. John was always willing to help his children in any ways possible.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Carol White.
A visitation for John will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Moore Bowen Road Funeral Home, 4216 South Bowen Road, Arlington, TX 76016. A funeral service will occur Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 10:00 AM, 4216 South Bowen Road, Arlington, TX 76016. A committal service will occur Friday, February 2, 2024 at 10:15 AM at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211. Pastor Nathan Tucker is officiating.
