Times were tough, the Unites States was experiencing the Great Depression. During the early years, while growing up on the farm, she would help her mother raise her brothers and sisters and do chores around the farm house. She would help her father in the fields, help with the cows, pigs and chickens until her brothers would be old enough to help. In later years, her hands showed the signs of hard work. At a young age, she was in an accident that left her with vision impairment in one eye, but she never let her vision be a problem or a hindrance in her life. Even with all of these obstacles, she attended school, made excellent grades and was advanced 1 grade level by the time she graduated high school.
Upon early graduation, she left Henderson and went to Port Arthur to live with her Aunt, her father's sister, attended secretarial school and worked for the Texaco refinery.
While working at the refinery, she met a tall, good looking young man, her future husband, Ben. They dated for 30 days and on August 18, 1944 were married. They were married for nearly 64 years until his passing.
In 1945, Ben and Maurice moved to Arlington, Texas. Maurice worked at Vandergriff Chevrolet as secretary to Hooker Vandergriff until 1947. During this time, friends and business relationships were made. Moving to Fort Worth, Maurice worked for Freese and Nichols as the secretary to Mr. Nichols.
Maurice became a Mom on April 4, 1951 to Shawn Lucas and again on November 19, 1956 to Kim Lucas. She became a Grandmother with the birth of her daughters' son, Jeremy Lucas.
Maurice and family relocated many times over the years due to Ben's employment. Texas, Tulsa Oklahoma, and Westport Connecticut. The move to Connecticut for her was the best. Her friendships and memories of Connecticut never dimmed. The final journey was back to Texas where she found a passion for gardening and horse racing. Maurice was an excellent race horse handicapper and continued her life in Texas for 53 years until her passing.
Maurice was a kind and loving person and never met a stranger. She fought for the underdog always. The world is a sadder place without her. Mom we have always and will always love you, as long as think of you, you still live with us.
