Alice and her younger brother Franklin immigrated to Houston in the early 80's. She graduated from Bellaire HS and then the University of Houston with a degree in accounting. It was there she formed an eclectic collection of friends who have remained close throughout her life.
After graduation she returned to U of H as an undergraduate advisor in the Math department. It was there she met the love of her life David. After he finished his graduate studies he somehow convinced Alice to join him in Washington D.C. as he started his new career as a mathematician at the Naval Research Laboratory in 1998. Alice soon joined the Chronicle of Higher Education in the accounting department and became part of the Chronicle family, a position she has held to this day.
After a lengthy courtship - that included a botched proposal at the base of the Eiffel tower - Alice took David to Rio for Carnival. While there David proposed to Alice in front of the statue of St. Valentine on Valentine's day. In keeping with their adventurous spirit, they married in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve 2002 at the Chapel of the Old West (no Elvis’ involved) amongst a close circle of family and friends, including two bride’s maids and two best men.
Alice was passionate about many things including volunteering and helping others. She was usher at both the Warner and Shakespeare theaters. She also spent nearly 20 years as a volunteer babysitter at Foundry Methodist Church, in D.C. In recent years she also served as the wedding coordinator at the Foundry.
In addition to her loving husband, Alice is survived by her father Jung Ku Chang, mother Chiou O “Hsu” Chang, and brother Franklin Chang all of Houston, Texas; father-in-law Robert Gillis of Dayton, OH, brothers-in-law Patrick (Latesha) of Bertram, Texas and Jeffrey (Ana) of Holyoke, MA; nephews Ryan and Cameron, niece Lasey, extended family both here and abroad, and countless close friends.
A memorial service and celebration of life gathering will be held in the near future. For more information please contact [email protected] .
