It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of U.S. Navy Captain Americo Joseph Casucci, also known by many friends and family as Ric. On July 17th 2023, at the remarkable age of almost 103, Ric peacefully left this world, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of history.
Ric was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1920, but grew up in Mt. Vernon, New York. He attended New York University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1943. Upon graduation, he attended the U.S. Naval Midshipman School at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana where he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve upon which his military career began.
Ric’s life was one marked by courage, honor, and selfless service. He proudly served his country during World War II, standing among the many men who fought tirelessly to defend freedom and democracy. His indomitable spirit and steadfast dedication led him to participate in the pivotal D-Day invasion. Ric, his wife Vivienne, and daughter, Linda, settled in the Washington D.C. area after retiring where he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration and was involved in the Civil Aviation Anti-Hijacking Program, focusing on the hijack threat as the Intelligence Program Officer.
Beyond his service to our great country, Ric embraced the roles of father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Affectionately known as PopPop to his grandchildren, Ric cherished his family above all else and was a pillar of strength, offering guidance, support, and love. To all who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life, his presence brought warmth, laughter, and wisdom to countless gatherings and his legacy will forever inspire future generations. Ric’s kindness, compassion, and resilience touched the hearts of all who knew him. His wisdom and grace were unmatched, and his words of encouragement and advice continue to resonate in the lives of those he influenced. He possessed an infectious zest for life and a vibrant spirit that defied age, leaving an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of everyone he met.
As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, let us also celebrate the incredible life he led. Ric leaves behind a lasting legacy of bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering love. His memory will be forever cherished by his family and friends, and his heroism will continue to inspire generations to come. Ric leaves behind his devoted daughter, Linda Casucci, of Centerville, Virginia, his grandsons, Justin Neubauer of California (wife Hillary) and Jaie Neubauer of California (wife Christine), and great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Luca, Ryan, and Rhys Neubauer.
In this time of sorrow, may we find solace in the knowledge that Ric’s spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid him farewell, let us honor his memory by carrying forward the values of integrity, service, and love that he exemplified throughout his long and illustrious life.
