Salzano Carlo Salzano Sr, age 93, passed away on July 9, 2020. Carlo was born and raised in Philadelphia by his parents Pasquale and Rosa (Cottone) Salzano. Pasquale immigrated to the US in 1914 and Rosa in 1923 both through Elis Island. Carlo attended Southeast Catholic High School and remained a proud and active alumnus. Driven by his strong patriotism, at the age of 17, he received permission to leave high school early to enlist in the US Army in 1944. He completed high school and received his diploma later that year while in the Army. He also attended training at Pennsylvania Military College, Fort McClellan in Alabama, Camp Shelby in Mississippi, and Fort Meade in Maryland. Carlo was a proud Army Veteran serving time training in the infantry and was preparing to deploy to Japan as World War II ended. He always liked to say that the war ended because the Japanese found out he was coming over, and they quickly surrendered. Carlo graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from LaSalle College in Philadelphia. He also enjoyed participating in the journalism club and writing for the school paper. After graduation he spent a short time working at a sugar factory but soon moved on to pursue his true passion of journalism. Carlo quickly landed a job with UPI and was transferred to their Charleston West Virginia office. After a very successful stay in Charleston, he was then promoted to Correspondent at UPI’s Washington DC office. He eventually accepted a job in DC working for a transportation trade magazine called “Traffic World”. He spent 20 years there mostly as their Managing Editor. He was happy to share his love of journalism and editing with his friends and family. He would even jokingly point out typographical errors in newspapers long before spell check existed. In retirement, Carlo continued freelance writing for several maritime and transportation publications such as Waterways Journal. In 1954 Carlo met his future wife Dora Mazzella, whom he later married in 1956 and shared 3 children. Carlo will always be remembered for his rich Catholic faith, sense of humor, love and dedication to Dora, amazing writing and editing skills, patriotism, easy going nature and quiet strength. He was generally quiet but when he spoke, it only took a few words to get his point across. He was also a long-time active member of St. Thomas More Cathedral Parish in Arlington VA, The Men’s Council, Knights of Columbus, and the Malvern Retreat House. He was a proud American who also loved his Italian heritage, speaking fluent Italian at every opportunity. He also kept in constant touch with friends and relatives in Italy. Carlo loved spending time with his family and felt blessed to have many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Dora and their 3 children, Maria Tedesco (Bill), Frank Salzano (Belinda), and Carlo “Cj” Salzano Jr (Michele).; 8 grandchildren, Michael, Gina, Elisa, Lia, Monica, Jenna, Jackie and Joseph. 6 Great grandchildren Claire, Allie, William, Lia, Ronan, and Scarlett.
