

Charlie Viars of Fairfax, VA, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 31, 2014. He died peacefully surrounded by his family, following a brief illness. He was 79 years old. Despite his illness, Charlie continued to display his gracious attitude and competitive spirit to those around him until the very end.
Charlie was born on May 4, 1935 in Oak Hill, WV. After serving his country in the Air Force, he attended Zion Bible College, which led him to preach at Aspley Assembly of God church in Nottingham, England before becoming a pastor at an Assembly of God church in Dundee, Scotland. Upon returning to the United States, he worked for the Department of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Naval Electronics Security Command and retired at age 70 from the National Security Group with 42 years of Federal service.
Charlie was an active member of the American Legion Post 139, serving as the Athletic Director, Chaplain and most recently, the Post Commander. He also coached youth basketball and baseball for over 30 years. He will be warmly remembered for his uninhibited commitment to serving others, his kind-hearted and compassionate nature, and his enduring love of baseball and basketball.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joy Viars; three daughters, Joy Bullock, Julia Field and Michele Cave; six grandchildren, Tara Segura, Luke Bullock, Leah Field, Hannah Field, Ethan Cave and Noah Cave; and three sons-in-law, John Bullock, Michael Field and Steven Cave.
