Francis (Frank) Owen McDermott passed away on November 19, 2024 due to natural causes. Born in Wyoming, Frank hailed from Omaha, Nebraska, where his parents Paul and Agnes raised their four children. After graduating from Creighton Preparatory School, Frank enrolled in Creighton University, but transferred to George Washington University in Washington, D.C. after being awarded a scholarship for oratorical excellence. He then extended his education at the Washington College of Law, graduating with his law degree in 1960. He married Joanne Frances Buckert in April of 1955 in Brighton, NY. The couple first settled in Washington, DC before moving to Arlington, VA where they had five children and attended St. Charles Borromeo Parish beginning in 1958.
Frank served in multiple ways at St. Charles Parish, including on the parish board and as a lector at Sunday Masses. He became a member of the Knights of Columbus, and volunteered as Scout Leader for many years. Volunteerism was a hallmark of his family, and Frank, Joanne, and their children were always involved in the parish, scouts, and other community efforts. A strong Jesuit upbringing made education of the utmost importance for the family. Almost every McDermott child went to St. Charles and then enrolled at O’Connell High School.
Frank held several positions both during school and after graduation including Senate Doorkeeper during the 83rd Congress, employment at the FBI, Mutual of Omaha claims supervisor, IRS litigation attorney, and staff member on the Committee of Finance. He had the honor of working for J. Edgar Hoover, Senator Harry Byrd (VA), and Senator Russell B Long (LA). He had a long and distinguished career on Capitol Hill as a lawyer and lobbyist serving in myriad positions for multiple law firms. Some of his work as a tax attorney was for the Veteran’s Affairs, American Railroads, and the National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA). After he retired, he kept tabs on friends and colleagues due to his strong commitment to tax law and a mutual respect for peers.
In 1986, he married Estella Idiaquez in a civil ceremony, and in 2001 they renewed their vows at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. With this union, Frank added an additional five step-children to his family. The couple lived in Arlington and enjoyed entertaining neighbors and loved ones at their home. Parties were memorable for both the array of cuisine and the laughter heard throughout the house. Frank’s voice seemed to carry for miles, and as a public speaker, this was no small advantage. Holidays were particularly lively with lights and decorations everywhere.
Frank loved history, philosophy, and poetry among his many pursuits and hobbies. He took up tennis later in life and enjoyed playing with family, friends, and colleagues. Frank’s passion on Saturdays were Nebraska and Notre Dame football games, but he never forgot to check on his beloved Creighton Bluejays during basketball season. Favorite holidays included Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day, but nothing could complete with the Mardi Gras celebrations at the Washington Hilton. During this season, he lived by the phrase “Laissez les bons temps rouler,“ and lagniappe became an extension of his generous and giving spirit. He loved being a member of the Krewe as the parties lasted for days.
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, March 15, 2025. Special Intentions go to the entire Jesuit Family who embraced Frank with enthusiasm and compassion, and to the St. Charles Borromeo community who were so important in the religious formation of the entire McDermott family. Frank’s favorite charities included Creighton University, The Knights of Columbus, and the Lakota people of the Black Hills Region. Special thanks to friends, especially from NDTA, who stayed in contact with Frank.
There will be a Celebration of Life Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church on Saturday, March 15.
The church is located at 3305 Glen Carlyn Road in Falls Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
