Gail L. Phillips passed away peacefully in her home on August 5, 2015 surrounded by the love of her family.
Her courageous eight year fight with cancer demonstrated enormous strength, perseverance and resilience. Her overall grit was awe inspiring.
Gail loved gardening, gourmet cooking for family holiday dinners, finding lovely works of art to grace our home, best-selling novels, PBS UK mysteries, New York Times crossword puzzles, classical music, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and summer vacations on the coast of Maine and the Outer Banks.
She was a second grade teacher for 29 years at Oakridge Elementary School in Arlington. She especially loved a hands-on, discovery approach to teaching scientific concepts. She found great joy in inspiring gifted and talented students to greater intellectual heights.
Gail’s most cherished role of all was that of mother to our daughter Jennifer, whom she was tremendously proud of and dearly loved.
She is survived by her loving husband John and daughter Jennifer. A gathering of family and friends will be held in October to honor and celebrate her life. Please visit the guestbook at
to share your memories. Donations may be made to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research in lieu of flowers.
