
Jack L. Downie, 77, of Arlington VA, former resident of Wheeling, WV passed away peacefully on Monday December 26, 2022 at Vitality Living Arlington in Arlington, VA. He was born March 23, 1945 in Hamilton, OH, son of the late Florence and Wallace Downie. He is survived by his son Brian J. Downie of Alexandria VA, and brother James W. Downie of Hamilton, OH. Jack was a very loving father and was especially proud of his son Brian and all of Brian’s accomplishments.
Jack was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, OH with a BS degree in Chemistry and an MS degree in Organic Chemistry. He served in the US Army Chemical Corps during the Vietnam War. He worked for the Environmental Protection Agency at the Region 3 Western Field Office in Wheeling, WV for 42 years. Jack was an On Scene Coordinator for many Superfund Sites during his career at the EPA. He was involved in the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster and the 9-11 Flight 93 disaster. Jack received numerous awards for his contributions and accomplishments.
He received his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. He also enjoyed scuba diving, classic cars, and especially boating. Jack was a world traveler. He traveled to Canada, Mexico, UK, Europe, Barbados, Egypt, Japan, Guam, and Saipan. After retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Florida with friends.
There will be no visitation. Internment will be Friday, January 6th 2023 at Quantico National Cemetery in Virginia.
