Jim graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1963 and went on to serve a distinguished 20-year career in the Navy defined by duty, leadership, and patriotism. Later, as a professor at Defense Acquisition University, he became known for his patience, encouragement, and unforgettable sea stories, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
Jim was deeply devoted to his family and never missed a sporting event, recital, or important milestone in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He had a special gift for making the people around him feel loved, whether through surprise doughnut deliveries to his daughter in college, slipping candy or a few dollars to his grandchildren, or simply showing up whenever he was needed most. His generosity, humor, and unwavering support will be remembered always.
Jim was also known for his strong political convictions and steadfast principles, which lead to his work with Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 election and his famous refusal to golf with a sitting President of the United States.
Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathy; his daughters Michelle, Jeni (Mark), and Sarah (Bill); eight grandchildren; one delightful great-granddaughter; and his siblings Dale (August), Jane (Paul), Lynne (Harry), George (Clare), Tom (Kerry), and Kevin (Anne). He now joins his beloved parents, George and Dorothea, in heaven.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church 1914 Randolph St. Arlington, VA on June 10, 2026 at 10AM. A reception will follow at the Parish Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Jim’s memory through a donation to a veterans’ organization of your choosing.
We love you, Jimmy. Fair winds and following seas.
