Murphy Funeral Homes

James Robert Talley (Jim), age 61, of Falls Church, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, August 5th 2023. Jim was born on May 15, 1962 to John and Mary Lou Talley, in Rome, New York. After Jim graduated high school, he left home for Charlotte, North Carolina and became a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman. He then did a stint in Galveston, Texas with his brother, John. After these excursions, he came back home and excelled in Herkimer Community College and transferred to Clarkson University where he received a degree in Computer Science. He later earned a Master’s of Business Education degree from Virginia Tech. Jim worked for Lockheed Martin for 13 years and for the last 6 years has been employed by Truist, Bank as a Financial Advisor. He loved his job and was devoted to it. He cared so much for his clients. Jim and Lizabeth, “Liz” met in Arlington County in 2007 at a Banquet for the Prison Ministry that they were both involved in. They soon found out that they had many common friends. In 2013, they were married in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Jim was a devoted and loving husband to Liz. Jim is survived by his son, Sean Talley and his daughter, Lindsay Talley. Jim was predeceased by his father and mother, John and Mary Lou Talley. He is survived by his siblings, Martha (Jane) Talley, Ruth Talley, John Talley and Paul (Dale) Talley. Jim was a very giving person and had a big heart. He was funny and a lot of fun to be around. He volunteered at the Arlington County Jail for many years where he conducted Bible Studies with inmates. He also devoted a lot of his time on the Church Council of Faith Lutheran Church for many years and close to many of Faith’s members. He has a lot of interests, including a love for the outdoors, cycling, tennis (with Liz), skiing, traveling and swimming. There was not an ocean that was too cold for Jim. He also loved a challenge and was always ready to try something new. Although hard for many to understand, he was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns and enjoyed College and Pro Football. A passion of his was sailing. He was a member of the Sailing Club of Washington (SCOW) for 12 years. He became a certified skipper right away and sailed with the club and took out many of his friends on sailing trips on the Potomac. He enjoyed many of their social activities and had many friends in SCOW. He also served in various positions in the Club. One other interest of Jim’s was on the social side - he was definitely a beer enthusiast and was well educated in all things about beer. He also loved his beer tastings with close friends; his last was a week before his death. And last to mention, Jim had a love of plants. We have so many plants that he has nurtured for many, many years. And they always live! He will be missed dearly. Visiting hours will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia on Friday, August 18th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.
