He was my father. He chose to forget me, but I have never forgotten him. I see part of him in my own face each morning  in the mirror. 

I wish we could have reconciled while he was still on earth. Instead we wasted almost 40 years in silence.  Today I turned 70. I will never forget him, and wished our parting had been on more a  amicable and mature footing.

Sorry Dad.

Daddy, I will always love and miss you. You are my hero. You had a wonderful life, and all of your children know how much you love them. Thank you for being such a wonderful man and father. Thank you for all of the love, life, help, and support. You are and will always be y hero. Thank you Daddy.

Larry Dempsey was a friend and contemporary, both in the Federal civilian sector and AFOSI Reserves. He had a great sense of humor and was committed to any assignment given to him. He never forgot his NYC "roots" and would go out of his way to help just about anyone. I will remember him with much fondness. Larry hired me at USAID OIG, which became a life changing experience for me. My condolences to Susan and his family for their loss.

I worked for Larry at the USAID OIG and we were both AFOSI reservists. Remembering Larry brings back many interesting memories. My sincere condolences to Susan and his family for their loss.

Larry was a wonderful friend with a terrific sense of humor. We had some good times together and he will be sorely missed. It was a honor to have known him. When I went to Desert Storm he gave me his  fraternal police membership card and told me if I got it trouble to show it to the police! Not sure the Saudi police would have honor the card but it was the thought that counted. God rest his soul.

I worked at the GSA OIG when Larry Dempsey served as the Assistant IG for Investigations.  My fondest memory of him is that he was an extremely kind man.  May God have mercy on his soul and richly reward him for his kindness.  Therese N.

Lawrence Larry J. Dempsey was a NYPD Police Officer for 20 years and rose through the ranks of the department to Detective Lieutenant. He was then assigned to the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI), which is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country to combat corruption in public institutions. He was the ranking NYPD Supervisor assigned to the Unit from the NYPD. He was next "on-loan" to the then NYC Department of Housing & Development (HDA) as its Inspector General. Upon retirement from the City, he was appointed the Assistant Inspector General (IG) for the US Agency for International Development (AID OIG), and then later the Assistant IG for Investigations at the General Services Administration (GSA OIG). In addition, during those same years, he served 25 years in the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) as a reservist before his retirement at the rank of Colonel.

My father had been sick the last two years and after a long life dedicated to public service, he passed away last night at the age of 82. My father will eventually be buried in Arlington Cemetery with honors. My father was an avid auction-goer and collector for more than 40 years.  I am very proud of my father and proud to have been his son.  I am grateful that his suffering has finally ended.  

I hope you do not mind me sharing his history & his passing with you.



I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.  Colonel Dempsey sounds like a great guy, you have very good reason to be proud.  He will be with you forever and his legacy will be passed down for generations to come.  Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
