Margaret was a devout Christian and a loving mother and Granny. She was always thrilled to cook for guests and for many years was the “cake lady” at work. She was determined and loyal in her service to her family and friends. Born in Columbus, MS, she was raised on tenant farmland around Birmingham, AL. At age 15 she went to work as a Woolworth’s clerk and began a retail career that stretched for over 70 years. In the Washington DC area she was a valued merchandiser for local department stores Kahn’s, Woodward & Lothrup, and Lord & Taylor. Margaret was a resident of Arlington County Virginia for over 60 years, and it was there that she enjoyed raising her family with her late husband John W. Prather, who preceded her in death in 1991. April 28th would have been their 68th wedding anniversary.
Surviving are her three children Alice Coppa (Mike) of Richmond, VA, King Prather (Pam) of Cary, NC and Bob Prather (Laurie) of Falls Church, VA, and her seven grandchildren Anne Coppa of Oakland, CA, Caroline Coppa of Richmond, VA, Nicholas, Lindsey and Rachel Prather in North Carolina, and Abby and Jordan Prather of Falls Church, VA.
A memorial service will be performed by Margaret’s nephew the Reverend Guy Anderson from Selma, AL at the Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church on May 20, 2019 at 1:00pm. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception following the service.
