Grant, I am sorry to learn of your Dad’s passing. I will forever remember him with a cocktail in hand at many Army celebrations. My brother and I played with you, while your dad and mom cut up with my parents. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a great joke to share. In fact, the first rated R joke I heard was from him. Dad and I were buddies. He carved out so much time to be there for me when I was growing up.  He was at every practice, every game and every event.  From a young age, he and I loved watching movies and TV shows together. Miami Vice was one of our favorites – with Dad teaching me to shoot the bad guys when they came on screen.  We especially loved to go to the movies.  It would be the highlight of our week.  Dad liked all kinds of movies, but our favorite was James Bond.  Dad obviously had a taste for the finer things in life, Rolexes, exotic cars, adventure… women.  James Bond was a perfect fit.  

It didn’t matter what I was into or interested in.  Dad always wanted to be part of it.  Likewise, I was interested in everything Dad did and liked.  He grew up loving to hunt and fish, and he made sure that I had the same opportunities.  He was a Dallas Cowboys Fan, so I became a Cowboys fan even before I really knew what football was.  Dad also liked watching the Texas Longhorns play football, so naturally The University of Texas was the only instate school I applied to.  When I decided to go to the The University of Texas, Dad was all in.  UT gear is pretty much all he wore from then on out.  Their neighbors in San Antonio would call him “Mr. Texas.”  

I was always in awe of my dad as a kid.  Dad would come home from work wearing BDUs, so I also had to wear camouflage when he got home.  I wanted to be just like him and have all the crazy experiences he did.  Ultimately that is impossible.  The man just can not be duplicated.  There will never be another Col. Zale Edward Cook.

Ed was a wonderful uncle--fun, funny, supportive. He always called me Melvyn, but I can't remember why. He had the courage to make a big and productive life. I miss his presence in the world, but I know he suffered through tremendous health challenges in recent years and I welcome his freedom from that suffering.

May his memory be a blessing.

Please accept our most heart felt condolances at the passing of your dad and our dear friend Ed.

I served with Ed at Ft. Leavenworth and at the Pentagon ... I could always count on getting sound sage analysis and advise on Army issues I was working with. 

We both did tours in RVN at the same time, Ed with the 9th ID in the Delta  and I with the 11Th ACR in  IIICorp and Cambodia.  We discussed operations and terrain differences of both areas and we both enjoyed  military history.

I hope that Ed, even though he's a Red Leg, "ride back to refill his canteen and drink again with friend at 'Fiddlers Green'."

Ed will be sorely missed!
