Born to Herman Roosevelt Arvin and Decila Rebecca Hammock Gary, Frances lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to her family, her profession, and the simple joys of home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd Steven Smith; her parents; and her son, Henry Ernest Ketner, II.
Frances had a deep love for gardening and could often be found tending to her flowers and working in her yard, where she found both peace and purpose. Her home was a place of beauty and warmth, reflecting the care she poured into everything she did.
A dedicated nurse, Frances was proud to be the second nurse hired at Randolph-Macon College. She served with compassion and professionalism, touching countless lives through her commitment to caring for others. Her work was not simply a career but a calling, and she carried that same nurturing spirit into her family life.
She is survived by her children, Robert Monroe Ketner, III and Frances Ketner Gilman. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Robert Monroe Ketner IV (wife Elizabeth); Robin Blanchard; Mary Gilman; Rebecca Davis (husband, Dwayne), Howard Gilman (wife, Michelle); Matthew Ketner; and Mark Ketner (wife, Flo). She further leaves behind eight great-grandchildren who were a special source of pride and joy in her later years.

A life celebration service will be held at a later date.
