James Edward Vass

VASS, JAMES E. “JIM”, 67, of Doswell, passed away peacefully October 5th, 2013, after a ten month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Jim was preceded in death by his son, Clay Vass. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary L. Vass (Lyn); and his three children, Beth Vass Reed (Marshall), Paula Vass Price (Jamie), and Drew C. Vass (Jennifer). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Lottie, Summer, Arayna, Storm, Randall, Chenoa, Autumn, Carter, and Liam. He is also survived by his sisters, Jane V. Horton and Ann B. Long; and a brother, Guy Brothers; along with many other family members. Jim was a long-time devoted member of Elon Baptist Church where he served as deacon and the head of many committees. He was also a lifetime member of the Doswell Ruritan Club and served the county in many ways. He was a partner/owner of Coldwell Banker Dew Realty and was a respected, hard-working realtor and broker for many years. He enjoyed many things in life and was very active. His most beloved hobby was the enjoyment of his horses- a love he shared with anyone that knew him. He was a man of great faith and served his Lord and witnessed to many. He was an example to those around him. The family will receive visitors at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7. The funeral service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 2: 00 p.m. with interment following in Elon Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Elon Baptist Church or to the Massey Cancer Center.
