John Pimblett, 59, died on April 1, 2026, in Ashland, Virginia, while walking on the trail he built and loved in the woods behind his home. His unexpected passing from heart failure came in a place that reflected the deep love for the outdoors that shaped his life.
Born in Newport News, Virginia, John graduated from Warwick High School and Mary Washington College. He and his wife of 30 years, Christine, spent time living in Colorado before settling in Virginia, where he made his home for the past 25 years. The mountains and the natural world were central to who he was. He was also deeply committed to his family and community.
Cycling was one of John’s greatest passions. Over the years he rode nearly every discipline — road, mountain, cyclocross, track, and gravel — and was a Colorado state champion. For John, cycling was about far more than competition. The sport introduced him to a community of riders who became some of his closest and enduring friends. Many of his happiest days were spent riding long miles, pushing himself on a race course, and sharing stories after a ride.
John devoted countless hours to protecting the places he loved, especially the mountains of Colorado and Virginia. Through his work with the Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club, he helped preserve the Appalachian Trail so that hikers today, and for years to come, can experience its beauty and challenge. Dave Wilcox of the ODATC said, “He will be sorely missed as one of our strongest and most talented volunteers.” John also found joy in skiing, hiking, backpacking, and exploring new places on foot and on two wheels.
As a leader in Cub Scout Packs 736/706/718 and then Boy Scout Troop 700, he guided all three of his sons through scouting, sharing his love of the outdoors while helping prepare them to take on the world with confidence, resilience, and curiosity.
Professionally, John built a long and respected career in the technology field, including more than 20 years at Capital One. He was known for his dedication, thoughtfulness, and steady leadership.
John is survived by his wife, Christine, their three sons, William, Andrew, and Tyler and his mother-in-law, Sue Schneider. He is also survived by his siblings Patrick, Mary, Kathleen, and Margaret (Jeff); his siblings-in-law Susan Pimblett and Andy Schneider (Krista); and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Joanne Pimblett; his father-in-law, Jim Schneider; and his brother, Jim Pimblett.
Even in death, John will continue to make a difference. As an organ and tissue donor, he will help improve and save the lives of others. In lieu of flowers, please honor his memory with a donation to the Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. A celebration of life is being planned. Details will be shared when finalized.
