He was born on September 8, 1932 in Poquoson, VA. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Shirley; two children, Michael Barton (Angie) and Belinda Shamy (Edward); three grandsons, Jordan Barton (Caylee), Brandon Shamy (Melissa) and Tyler Shamy; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Ashton Athearn (Jim).
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Thomas Land.
Merrill was graduate and athlete of Randolph Macon College, he worked in the banking industry and returned to Randolph Macon as Director of Financial Aid. He later worked at VCU as Business Manager in the Athletic Department and retired in 1994. Merrill was honored to have served in the US Coast Guard, retiring after 39 years as a Commander. Merrill was President of the Ashland Little League and Youth Association Basketball. He and his wife, Shirley, helped create the first Girls Softball League as well as Youth Basketball League in Ashland.
A celebration of life memorial service shall be held at a later date.
