Webb was born on March 3, 1941, in Richmond, VA, to John Fouse Midyette and Lucile Ellett
Gilman Midyette. She grew up in Ashland, VA, and graduated from Henry Clay High School.
She went on to attend Mary Baldwin College, Randolph-Macon College, and Richmond
Professional Institute (RPI), graduating with a BS in accounting in 1968.
Webb married Edward Augustus Smith III on April 18, 1969, in Ashland. The couple had 2
children. They were members of Reveille United Methodist Church.
After graduation from RPI, Webb worked as a staff accountant at Virginia Electric & Power
Company. While taking a break in her career to raise her family, Webb continued to volunteer
with organizations in ways she could use her sharp mathematical skills. She volunteered with
Reveille United Methodist Church, The New Community School, and served as the treasurer for
several groups such as the New Community School PTA and the Richmond Renegades Booster
Club. If anyone needed help with a bulk mailing, she was on the ready. Webb returned to work
as a bookkeeper for the periodontal office of Drs. Kaugars and Miller in 2000, retiring in 2015.
Since childhood, Webb loved spending time at the Midyette family cottage on the Chesapeake
Bay. For many years she kept the books and ran “the business” of this beloved shared space.
Nothing made her happier than enjoying a cold Coke and steamed crab with a view of the bay.
Webb had a unique talent of creating lasting friendships. The Smith Family home was a
welcoming place for many who visited or even needed to stay for a while. Her friendships were
varied and spanned generations.
A preschool carpool assignment improbably led to one of Webb and Eddie’s closest and most
enduring friendships. Richard and Jean Donaldson, along with their son Jed, shared many
adventures with the Smith family.
She was an avid baseball and hockey fan, and she and Eddie served for many years on the
Richmond Renegades booster club. Communications with players and their families illustrate
her talent for creating lasting friendships.
Webb is survived by her son, Edward Augustus (Ted) Smith IV (Carolina Lugo); daughter,
Margaret (Maggie) Midyette Smith (David Chamblin); grandchildren, Edward Augustus (Quin)
Smith V and Esther Lucy Smith; niece, Angela Helen Merola; and nephew, Joseph Edward
Merola. She is preceded in death by her husband Eddie and her parents.
A private graveside service was held October 29th at Woodland Cemetery in Ashland. A
memorial service will be held at Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond on Saturday,
December 21st, at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation or Reveille United Methodist Church.
