The family are very sad to announce that Charles Alexander Anton Yost, age 72, passed away peacefully with his family beside him on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at the Assiniboia Union Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Charlie is survived by his cherished wife of 50 years minus 27 days, Carla (nee Gibson) and his beloved children: Ira, Evan (predeceased 2009), Robin (Tammy Hanson) and Theron (Amanda, nee Carriere) and his special grandchildren: Shiann Lazorko (Dillon Carroll), Zoey Yost Healy, Kota Yost,

Left also to cherish Charlie’s memory are his beloved sisters Charlotte Bjornson, Marvel Coghlin, and Rita Gosselin (Noel), and his brother-in-law Gord Gibson (Mary Lou); also nieces and nephews: Allen, Brent, Laura, Lisa, Keira, Neil, Kelly, Noah, Myles, Randie, and their families.
Charlie is also survived by one uncle, Joe Yost, numerous cousins, and countless friends, especially his closest, Roger and Sandy Lamontagne.
Charlie is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Barbara Yost, his parental-in-laws Courtney and Leona Gibson, his son Evan Yost and brothers-in-law Ken Bjornson and Barry Coghlin and nephew Marc Coghlin.
Charlie was born on Tuesday, December 10th, 1952 at 5:10 am. in the old Red Cross Hospital on the hill overlooking the town of Rock Glen. He was the baby of the family, having 3 older sisters. Charlie was very close to his father, helping him do work around the farm. Together they would sit for hours and listen to the old Philco radio and 78 om-pa-pa records. At a very early age Charlie learned the beauty of music and knew how special it was to him.
Charlie's sisters attended Ayrton Country School but it closed and so Charlie attended Rockglen School until he graduated in June of 1970. In the winter he rode the bombardier as it was often parked in the Yost's yard. He was part of a crew that planted trees all over RM#12 and he was so proud of those beautiful rows of trees that are still standing today. It was always assumed that Charlie would take over the family farm and eventually he did, seeding grain at first and later alfalfa and raising cattle. In 1998 they rented out the hay and pasture land. On August 8, 1975 he married Carla Gibson, a teacher that came to town. They were very happy together and raised 4 sons: Ira, Evan, Robin, and Theron. Charlie was president of the Historical Society and instrumental in helping to get the CPR station turned and moved from the end of Centre St. to its present site. After taking Grade 11 & 12 Physics by correspondence, Charlie was hired on permanently at Poplar River Power Station in 1986, first as a coal handler and later as a store keeper. He retired from Sask Power after exactly 29 years of service on Nov. 12, 2014. From 1997 - 2001 Charlie and Carla owned and operated a shoe repair shop, Caycee's Shoe Box (in Rock Glen and Assiniboia). Charlie taught himself the trade and all went well until he became allergic to the glue and was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in his back which caused him extreme, sharp pain. Sask Power sent him for extensive physio therapy sessions.
Tragedy struck the family in 2009 when Evan (30) was killed in an oil tanker accident at Lake of the Prairies. Their lives have never been the same, but the extended family they inherited and a surprise grandson (born 8 months later) have been a blessing for them. The Yost family looked after grass cutting and maintenance of the St. John's RC Cemetery for 27 years and so Charlie ended up burying people also. Later Charlie and Carla often cut 4 other cemeteries. Charlie was a creative and gifted Mr. Fix-it and he loved the challenges. Charlie loved nature, especially birds and trees. He planted 7 half mile shelterbelt rows down his fields and then Charlie and Carla planted over 13,000 trees, plus shrubs (all by hand) in their 30 acre yard (and created a labyrinth also). Their yard is like a park but they greatly enjoy working in it. Charlie loved Archie comics, crossword puzzles, cribbage and schmear games (Big Beaver rules), and collecting Christmas tins, and Belarus tractors. He loved to tell stories. Most conversations led to a story. He was known for his wit and sarcasm and his cowboy coffee as well as his plaid clothing. He was a kind and gentle soul who had a knack of putting people at ease and bringing smiles to people's faces. Every acquaintance was quick to call him their friend. He was respected by all who knew him and that gave him great joy. He will be greatly missed but hopefully lovingly long remembered. He died suddenly but peacefully on Saturday, July 12th in Assiniboia Union Hospital.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at 2:00 pm. at the Rockglen Community Hall. Family will share memories, ask others to share their memories, provide a powerpoint presentation of Charlie’s life and share some of his favorite songs.
