Darryl Ortly was born May 7th, 1955 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He grew up and took his schooling in Assiniboia. On May 19th, 1973 he married Sandra Marcenko and they continued to make Assiniboia their home while raising their three children Shannon, Chad and Jeremy. Darryl inherited his work ethics from his father and father-in-law. In his youth he worked at the Bowling Alley and later on with the Mixed League, bowling many a fast throwing game. He worked along with his family at their business, Assiniboia Hatcheries. Spring was a very busy time and the hours were long but he truly enjoyed his days there. Darryl began his 35 year journey with Thrifty Foods in June 1975, working for his father-in-law. In 1996 he became the manager and purchased the business in 2009 with Sandy and Chad, the store became known as Assiniboia Foods. Darryl took immense pride in the grocery business and put all his effort into meeting his customer’s needs. He truly loved the socializing and many humorous conversations with his loyal customers. It was a very sad day when a fire occurred on November 29, 2011 and the business was destroyed. There was a huge void left in Darryl’s life as the store was his second home and was a lost soul for a long time after. Darryl served on the local school board and became a Trustee for the Red Coat Trail School Division from 1990 – 1997. This was a position that he took very seriously and was once again following in his father and father-in-law’s footsteps. Darryl had been a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus #3360 and a member of the council for 32 years. He was awarded Knight of the Year in 1983 which gave him much pride. He held many executive positions over a 12 year period and held many of his brother knights in high esteem. As a father Darryl was very active in his children’s sports. Whether it be watching volleyball, baseball, hockey, or football he strove hard to attend. He coached and umpired many a baseball game and drove countless miles for his children’s games. Darryl’s favorite relaxation spot was in his backyard. He hated a weed in his lawn and was always on top of that. His love for birds was inherited from his mother and he was constantly filling many bird feeders and waterier. Sunny days in the yard were spent with the grandchildren and many a family BBQ was held. He had very much to be proud of in his short 57 years but his biggest pride was his watching his family grow and prosper. With heavy hearts and profound sense of loss we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, we will cherish his memory in the years to come.
