

George Roland Thompson was born May 16, 1926 in Moose Jaw, SK. He grew up in the south hill area of Moose Jaw and completed grade 8 at King Edward School. As a young man, he worked as a farm hand, delivered coal for Beaver Lumber, built windows for army camp for R.L. Cushing Millwork Co., worked at Swift Meat packing, then obtained his welding ticket – iron worker.
George served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Core for three years, serving in Sweden and was discharged in 1946. As the last active soldier in Dundurn, SK, he took pictures of the camp closing from the water tower; the article and pictures were published in the leader post (1946). Upon his discharge, George resided in BC and worked as an iron worker – welder, working throughout the Canadian provinces until his retirement. He was also the owner operator of a taxi service in Grand Forks, BC for twelve years.
He married Angela Moore (Hugo) and they made their home primarily in Grand Forks, BC until moving to Verwood, SK in 1986.
George had played hockey as a defense man during his army years. While residing in Verwood, George loved to wheel and deal on vehicles; fixing them up and selling them.
Predeceased by his wife Angela (Dec. 12, 2001), whom he looked after for seventeen years during her illness; he is survived by an older brother, James of High River, AB; his children: Ann, Nancy, Cathy, and Tommy all of Alberta as well as seven grandchildren.
Funeral Service was held Saturday, September 24, 2011 in Ross Funeral Chapel. Neil Gilbert officiated. Interment followed in the Verwood Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
